OTTAWA: Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) federal director Walter Robinson will testify before the Standing Senate Committee on National Finance which is currently studying Bill S-13, the Public Service Whistleblowing Act.
Date: Wednesday, April 12, 2000.
Time: 5:45 pm EST
Place: Room 705, Victoria Building, 140 Wellington Street
The CTF has repeatedly called for the implementation of Whistleblower Protection legislation which would encourage federal public servants to speak out and bring forward evidence of gross ethical or financial mismanagement when such instances contravene the public interest.
Presently, if public servants believe they are acting in the public interest and "blow the whistle" on untoward practices in government, they jeopardize their careers, as the effective employment statutes do not provide them with adequate protection from reprisal, harassment or career limitation.
During the CTF presentation to the committee, Mr. Robinson will outline the guiding principles which should underlie whistleblower protection legislation and recommend areas where Bill S-13 can be improved.
